My bike… My ride… My learning

I have got a Honda Unicorn. It’s pretty new and has clocked just 1768.6 kms. I planned to go for a long trip from Chennai to Bangalore. It is approximately 325 kms.

At first, I was bit scared of thinking about the massive 325 kms long and the speed of the other vehicles. From my childhood, when I used to ride bicycle, I would be scared when someone overtakes me at a greater speed than that of mine. Because sometime, no mistake of mine, I will be put in trouble.

Today, I was at good speed and overtaking others. And to my surprise, when I start overtaking others, I felt confident as if I had the control over the road. It thought me to Keep myself at speed than others and assume the control. It was not long before I learnt that I should not over speed too much to loose the control of the vehicle. In fact, at one point where there was a deep curve, I was almost striking 100 but couldn’t help much, I need to reduce to 60, and else probably I would have lost the control and skidded. No matter, the road may be under my control, it becomes useless unless the vehicle is under my control. When the same logic is applied to business or job, we have to be bit faster than the competitors to take control of it and we should not over speed ourselves to loose control on ourselves. When we over speed ourselves, we tend to loose the sane applicability of mind.

After traveling for twenty minutes, I have covered ten kilometers from my house and hit the main road and was happy as I have covered 1/35th of the distance. As I traveled further, simple math told me that to make it 1/30th from 1/35th would require just 2.3 kilometers but to reach 1/25th it would take another 3.5 kilometers and to cover 1/4th of the distance it would take another 70 kilometers and as I subtract the numeral in the denominator, the distance increases in a geometric progression. There is no wonder in it, are there? Are you wondering why I was saying this? I applied this to normal business or job. Keeping the total competitors at constant, to become one amongst thirty people it may take only 2.3 units of time and energy while to become one amongst twenty five people it may take 3.5 units of time and energy and so forth to become one amongst four it may take 70 units of time and energy. In order to climb the career ladder, one has to spend time and energy in geographic progression, by taking more responsibilities to deliver more.

Though the climate was good and the traffic was less, after forty five minutes of ride, I felt bit uncomfortable. I need some break. I scolded myself for getting tired so soon. I cursed my willpower and to satisfy my ego, I pushed for another quarter of an hour. I decided to take break once an hour. I took five such breaks. And I used those breaks to have some tea, have breakfast, call back my home to convey them that I am safe and where I am, to pay the tax etc. when once I started again after the break I felt bit comfortable and it helped me to ride happily with full concentration. This obviously says that one in job or business needs to take proper break to keep one self rejuvenated. And a break is not necessarily to keep oneself idle. But to use the time to do something else which will also be relaxing.

While taking breaks I removed my helmet and kept it in some place and was having some tea or some refreshment. Then I put on my helmet and started riding the bike. After few minutes, when my speedometer showed that I am at ninety plus. I felt a small disturbance and I could not concentrate on my riding. There was absolutely no problem in my bike but it was from a small insect in my helmet. I have to obviously stop the bike to remove it. But after few minutes, I found another, this time, I dint stop the bike but just lifted the viewer glass in my helmet and allowed the speed wind to blow off the insect. Can you guess, it even thought me a lesson? Again when I equated this to a situation I business or job, I could see something to learn. When ever someone takes an off from routine, do check his belongings before they are put to use. And never mind the size which creates the problem; mind the size of the problem that is created. It may be a small issue at some loose ends. But when not taken care at proper time, it may end up disastrous.

The natural scenery was excellent and I cursed myself in not bringing the camera with me. The roads were covered with flower bearing plants and few plants did bear beautiful flowers. Butterflies were flying across the roads. One such beautiful butterfly do came to say hi to me and was sitting right on my view finder in the helmet and obstructing the view ahead. That warned me, how so ever beautiful it is, it also lead me to loose my view. Beautiful women are beautiful butterflies, without their knowledge, they would obstruct the goal ahead. Now don’t call me a MCP as you are aware for any normal man a beautiful women are always a distraction. You can blame men for that. Blame the nature.

This was the first time I rode between Chennai and Bangalore myself. Though I have traveled in bus in the same route, I always traveled in night and half the time I was asleep and hence was not confident about the route. And I was also not having any map with me. So I didn’t miss any of the signboards which directed me to the destination. And that made me to learn the various places and the distance of various destinations, the emergency numbers, the toll charges etc. One at business always needs to open his eyes and ears to know where he is leading and in the meanwhile he should also know the various other destinations.

Would you believe I got few friends while I was riding the bike? Few of them overtook me. I overtook few of them. I could recollect the car which overtook me, while I overtook them. And couple of them recognized me when I was having my breakfast at a motel. One would always be recognized by others when they overtake or being overtaken. Furthering my travel, I found many of my companions were missing and I was traveling alone. In fact, there were no signboards for almost twenty kilo meters, so I slowed down a bit to see if some of them overtake me. But to my dismay, I found none. Then I came to know, they have taken an alternative route, which I was not aware. Always be aware of alternatives was the lesson I inferred from it.

As I said earlier, that I was bit scared when someone overtakes me at a greater speed, few of the cars just zoomed and made my heart to thud fast. This happens when I dint recognize that it’s going to overtake me. Why dint I recognize that some one is going to overtake me? That was because I failed to look at the mirror at regular intervals. However fast I am, however ahead I am of others, I always need to look back on the way I have come, and should always have a watchful eye on my competitor was the lesson it thought me.

It was a jolly ride and an excellent experience. I recollect a dialogue from a character Theo Buchan from the novel ‘Another Woman’ saying ‘Flying is the best physical pleasure on earth next only to sex’. Though I have not experienced both, I would safely replace ‘flying’ with ‘riding’.
